Thirty-six Views of the Mountain: Shore to Summit is a celebration of the quiet ways Kunanyi reveals itself in daily life — from the shimmer of Kingston Beach to the winding roads of the suburbs and the open sky at the summit.
Inspired by Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, these works pay homage to his deep love of the everyday — the way he found poetry in small encounters, fleeting weather, and the familiar silhouettes of a beloved mountain. Like Fuji in Hokusai’s prints, kunanyi becomes a magnetic anchor here: a steady presence that draws the eye and steadies the heart.
The linocuts trace moments of recognition — glimpses through an overpass, shadows on a track, the shift of light across water or stone. Many of the smaller works include handprinted verses of seven or five syllables, inviting viewers to compose their own haiku and create a personal journey through the exhibition.
