Homage to Hokusai
Belinda Hall
Lino cut and paint on Tosca Usushi Paper
Edition: 1/3
Framed: 96cm x 73cm

This large linocut is a tribute to the power and calm of the wave — an image that has followed me through life and into my printmaking. Inspired by Hokusai’s Great Wave, the work reflects the beauty, resilience and quiet strength found in water and in the everyday. The image draws on the inky blues of Tinderbox Marine Reserve — a place of sandstone cliffs, rock pools and drifting sea life — where I often swim and dream of Hokusai’s landscapes. Relief printmaking, like swimming, is a ritual for me: carving, inking and handling beautiful papers is a way of finding stillness, rhythm and possibility.
This eightplate Fibonacci linocut is printed in black Caligo ink on Tosca Usushi paper, with the spiral drawn by hand.
The piece is professionally framed by Artery, with a handcrafted frame and a generous mount that
gives the work space to breathe.
