While there are several species of Waratah which are native to south eastern Australia, this one, Telopea truncata, occurs naturally only in Tasmania, and is considered by many to be the most spectacular of all the summer flowering plants.
It occurs as a small tree or dense upright shrub, found mainly in mountain forests and alpine heaths at altitudes of 600-1200 metres. This specimen was observed in Mt Hartz National park.
