A tannin-stained creek winds through a remote alpine herbfield, high in the Western Arthur ranges.

Mt. Hayes is located in the Western Arthur ranges, in Tasmania’s remote South West. The range is characterised by pale-grey Quartzite that has been shaped by glaciation into wide hanging valleys, stark peaks and large areas of accumulated glacial debris. Wet button-grass plains and eucalypt forests grow on and around the ranges. The weather is unpredictable and forbidding; it rains six out of ten days in summer.

This image is one of the last taken by Peter Dombrovskis. It was in his camera when his body was recovered in the Western Arthurs in 1996. The police gave the camera to Chris Bell, instead of delivering it to the coroner who could have exposed the film and destroyed the image. This nonstandard and thoughtful decision on the part of the police saved the photo for posterity.
