Native herbs, mosses, grasses, shrubs and a bright green cushion plant adorn its fringes. Cushion plants, hard to the touch (and not soft as the name might suggest), are widespread throughout Tasmania's high country.
Pencil pines, on the other hand, are exceedingly vulnerable to fire and have had their range drastically reduced in the last 200 years. The largest remaining pencil pine forest, with stands of trees over 2000 years old, grows here in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park World Heritage Area.
