Artist's Statement- Never Far from Home, Zoë Fitzherbert
Perched in my studio overlooking the river towards Mount Direction, I am grateful every day for the calming, inspiring influence of the hills. My partner and I are firmly entrenched in our “busy years” - I feel stretched and overwhelmed by the demands of our small children and bursting with love and laughter at the same time. I find reprieve from the intensity of the highs and lows in my studio, drinking in the receding hills whose colours and character change every single day.
This body of work is not that of an intrepid hiker, pulled towards peaks - those days are in my past and, perhaps, my future. These works instead reflect the creative mind’s capacity to find magic and wonder in the everyday, to document and dream, to be inspired by the landscape that unfolds on our local horizons. We are so lucky here in nipaluna/Hobart - no matter how tired you are, the hills are everywhere, silently demanding your creative notice, and providing moments of tummy-flipping awe when you least expect it.
It can even happen on your way to Kmart.
Winner of the Henry Jones Art Prize for 2025, Zoë Fitzherbert paints abstract landscapes that carry reflections of place, atmosphere and memory. Her layered compositions trace the changing weather, colour and contours that shape how a landscape is felt and remembered, rather than seen.
A former architect, Zoë’s practice brings together instinct and precision: swathes of shifting, emotive colour layered with fine, map-like linework inspired by the cartographic conventions of her great-grandfather.
Raised in the misted hills of the Southern Highlands of NSW, Zoë now paints from her studio overlooking nipaluna/Hobart
