The White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) is the only species of heron known to breed in Tasmania. It is generally a solitary bird and has a predilection for nesting high up in tree tops.

White-faced Herons can be found anywhere where there is water; from the seaside to mudflats and even damp pastures. They are highly adaptable, opportunistic foragers, feeding on a variety of wildlife including small fish and crustaceans as well as molluscs and amphibians.

In ancient Greek tradition, herons were linked to deities like Athena and Aphrodite — representing wisdom, strategy, and grace. In Egyptian beliefs, the heron was associated with Creation and the sun god Ra.
