The Tasmanian Native Hen (Tribonyx mortierii), is a medium sized and flightless bird endemic to Tasmania.
When alarmed, these hens can run at speeds of up to 50km/h, hence their popular name of ‘Turbo Chook’. Moreover they make high pitched and distinctive screeching sounds when perturbed, and this can often happen during the night.
The pattern at the lower edge of this painting is a stylised representation of the grit and gravel in the earth that they, (as do other birds) ingest in order to be able to digest their food. It also emphasises that this bird is flightless and thus bound to the earth.
