The Green Rosella (Platycercus caledonicus) is native to Tasmania including the Bass Strait islands and is Australia’s largest rosella.
Although these vividly coloured birds prefer tree cover, and live in rainforests and woodlands, they can also be found in fields, orchards, and even city parks.
Green Rosellas enjoy a varied diet, comprising seeds, berries, insect larvae, and sometimes orchard fruits. They often spend a large portion of their day foraging on the ground.
However, they may be frequently found amongst flowers, where they enjoy nectar, and plucking and consuming blossoms and buds. It was this aspect of them that inspired the patterned border in this painting.
