The Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris) is a small and very lively honeyeater, which enjoys living in, and flitting through dense vegetation.
Their specialized beak allows them to reach deep into tubular flowers, and since (unlike most other Australian honeyeaters), they have the ability to move their wings at high speeds, they can even hover when extracting nectar from flowers.
The Eastern Spinebill feeds on the nectar of many plants, but in my garden the Eastern Spinebills are particularly fond of banksia flowers. In this painting I have located this small bird amongst the stylised and abstracted leaf rosettes of Banksia paludosa.
