The Common Bronzewing (Phaps chalcoptera) is a rather wary, largely ground-dwelling bird. It usually does not allow a close approach, but keeping low to the ground, flies away with a loud clatter of wings. They are amongst the fastest birds in the Australian bush, reaching speeds above 60km/h.

They are capable of consuming poisonous plants (such as Gastrolobium), and as a consequence they are avoided by some predators.

Their diet consists largely of seeds and vegetable matter. They are attracted to rural areas and will eat cultivated grain. The pattern at the lower edge of this painting reflects the small flowers often found growing in fields of grain.
