The name ‘godwit’ is believed to derive from the old English "god wicht”, which means "good creature”. Setting aside the likelihood that the term referred to their suitability as a game bird, it is an apt description. These are graceful and colourful birds, and a delight to observe in flight.

Rob Blakers has photographed in the wild places of Tasmania for over 40 years. His interests lie in landscape, environmental conservation and the evolution of photographic methods and values in the age of digital technology.
