Feathers, Fur, Fins
Belinda Hall
handprinted linocut with letterpress text
edition of 10
Feathers, Fur, Fins is a linocut that delves into the fragile existence of three Tasmanian creatures teetering on the brink of oblivion. The Forty-spotted Pardalote, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, and the Red Handfish are immortalized in this hand-printed piece, their forms etched with a haunting precision. The accompanying
haiku, stamped with vintage letterpress type, whispers a message that hovers between foreboding and hope, urging us to see the beauty in the unique.
The Red Handfish, with its almost grotesque appearance, embodies a strange and captivating beauty. The
Eastern Barred Bandicoot, often dismissed as rat-like, is a vital engineer of the ecosystem, tirelessly working to enrich the understorey and soils. The Forty-spotted Pardalote, depicted with a solidity and strength, carries a silent message in its wings—dot, dot, dot—like a morse code of nature's plea. These creatures, though overlooked, are the silent architects of our environment, their existence a testament to the delicate balance of life.
As viewers stand before Feathers, Fur, Fins, they are invited to reflect on the precariousness of these species and the broader implications of their potential loss. Yet, within this darkness, there is a glimmer of hope—a reminder that we hold the power to protect and cherish these unique beings. Let us not add to the sins of
habitat destruction, but instead, handle these animals with care and reverence, ensuring their survival for generations to come.
