The Tasmanian Magpie depicted in this artwork is a smaller, white-backed sub species of the Australian Magpie, and may be found on both King and Flinders Islands as well as in mainland Tasmania.
In autumn, this particular adult and juvenile often come to sit and warble on the fence railing of our paddock, against the backdrop of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
The carolling or warbling of magpies is regarded as one of the most beautiful of birdsongs; so much so that as a result, one of the magpie’s common names (now fallen somewhat out of use) is The Flute Bird.
It is also an excellent mimic; imitating approximately 30 or more native and introduced species of bird, as well as human speech.
Magpies are inquisitive by nature and are regarded as highly intelligent and complex birds.
Young magpies have lovely scalloped back feathers and often display play behaviour either amongst themselves or with the adults.
