The jewel-like pattern of spots on its body has given the Spotted Pardalote an alternative name, which is Diamond Bird. This brightly colourful little bird is the tiniest of the pardalotes and this particular one together with its mate, built its underground nest in a heap of brickies sand which we had stored near the base of the Eucalyptus viminalis, otherwise known as the Manna Gum, at the top of our driveway.
The pardalote would perch in the branches and feed off manna (a sweet gum exuded by this tree) as well as insects in the foliage, while excavating its nest below. It’s extraordinary to see the pardalote arriving at its underground nest, because it dives into the nest in full flight, which can be quite amusing, but perturbing at the same time.
The pattern along one side and across the lower edge of the painting represents a crystalline structure of jewels and the manna which exudes from this eucalypt.

Sylvie Gerozisis is a Tasmanian Botanical Artist, whose work also extends to Tasmanian wildlife subjects and landscapes.
She studied Fine Arts at Sydney University and Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, and has taught Visual Art as well as Design and Technology.
Sylvie works almost exclusively in watercolour, and her artwork often incorporates distinctive elements of pattern and design, which relate strongly to the particular subject.
She has exhibited widely over the years and her artwork is held in private collections throughout Australia.
The artwork is printed on 100% cotton rag archival paper. All prints have been personally checked and hand signed by the artist.
