Rock Pile

Russell Joyce

Digital Drawing
120 cm x 160 cm
Edition of 5

From the exhibition - 'The Little Mountain'

Russell Joyce is a printmaker whose artistic practice includes etchings, woodblocks and large scale digital drawings. His recent work focuses on the Tasmanian Bushland. He is currently interested in the scrambling bush surrounding Hobart, primarily in the beautiful bushscapes of Mount Nelson. His work documents the overlapping leaves, patterns of bark, and shifting grasses. It encompasses the way that lichen dots and colours the rocks, animating them like sleeping quolls. The drawing process is lengthy, allowing weeks of thinking time, during which he attends to the micro details, and finds expressive actions for each element.

Russell Joyce studied printmaking and drawing at the Australian National University, School of Art and Design, where he completed honours in 2002. He has since exhibited in the Adelaide Drawing Prize (Sydney) and at Brunswick Street Gallery (Melbourne), as well as exhibiting works in numerous group shows in Salamanca, Hobart.
