The Shank Returns

The Shank Returns

Ian Johnston
Hardcover
Published By Andrew Wilson Photograpy

First came The Shank, then The Shank Revisited and now The Shank Returns – a singularly unique publication whose primary purpose is to help safely navigate mariners along an expanse of rugged coastline besieged by the Southern Ocean and the Roaring Forties.

Yet over its three editions, The Shank has evolved into more than just a navigation guide, or Rutter. The Shank Returns is Ian’s dedication of love and clarion call to protect not only this staggeringly beautiful area, but all of the truly wild places left on our planet.

About the Author

Ian Johnston is a Master yachtsman. His qualifications include Australian Institute of Navigation Navigator of the Year 1988; Finalist for Australian Yachtsman of the Year; Tasmanian Yachting Hall of Fame; 150,000 sea miles, mostly in shorthanded multihull ocean racers.

He is one of the three founders of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival (and a life-member). Major interests at the festival include drawing attention to the continuing wasteful clear-felling of boat-building timber carried out by Forestry Tasmania and STT; bringing boat-building to motivated families and running the ‘quick and dirty’ boat-building. He continues to be the Constitution Dockmaster and to hold other significant roles at the festival.

He has helped the Cruising Yacht Club of Tasmania with writing their guide, Cruising Northeast Tasmania and encouraged Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) to install cruising moorings around Flinders Island.

He is an epic explorer, chronicler, photographer and conservationist of the Southwest Coast of Tasmania.

The Shank Returns is for anyone that wishes to turn the pages of adventure on the high seas, or plans to visit Tasmania’s wild South West Coast for themselves.
