When I am among the trees….
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily

Julie Stoneman Artist Statement August 2024
Julie’s current exhibition When I Am Among The Trees, is based on the Mary Oliver poem and asks the question 'how do I feel when I am among the trees?'

In this age of solastalgia our emotions are heightened and questions are asked.

Julie depicts Tasmania’s Eucalypt trunks in a variety of states, luscious fresh bark, insects eating intricate patterns, bright resinous colours from drought stress, old bark hanging in shreds, scarred bases revealing the older inner core of the tree & sculptural relics of a forest long gone.

When I Am Among The Trees invites people to share their responses of being among the trees, through posting photos of their favourite trees and tagging their personal responses on Instagram #When_I_am_among_the_trees

Julie creates these images using French shellac-based ink, drawing with pen and cotton buds, and then throws ink onto thick (640gsm) hot pressed Italian Fabriano paper to build up layers of translucent colour and metallic sheen. The works exude a vibrant glow that amplifies the power and wild beauty of our Eucalypts and yet at the same time is somehow other worldly.
