Belinda Hall - The Ripple Effect

The Ripple Effect

Varied Edition of 10

Blend-rolled linocut print, printed with linseed oil inks on Japanese rice paper.
Due to the handprinted nature of this technique, there are slight variations in tones of colours.

The Ripple Effect is made by repeated printing from two separate plates. The image is the same on each, but one’s a reflection of the other.  Eight triangular sections are aligned by eye, hinting at tectonic tension and potential energy lying just beneath the surface. This varied edition, VE, has been inked using a blend roll technique, where the ink is rolled in a continuous colour blend and applied to the block.

Lino-cutting is a sculptural process: tools cut, carve and shape, similar to the way in which the sea erodes coastlines and drills holes into sandstone. Fossil Cove is a small cove near where I live, and the ancient mudstone and beautifully formed arch are layered with fossils dating back 250 million years. These rock formations have been formed through displacement, and still, they stand with strength and dignity articulating a wild romance between sea and stone.

Rhyme, rhythm and ripples ebb and flow as the albatross is caught in the warm thermal currents, helping us to navigate storms and look for hope on the horizon.
