Orford Bird Sanctuary Booklet
Friends of Orford Bird Sanctuary
This beautiful and informative little pocket guide is a perfect companion for a visit to the Sanctuary.
The Orford Bird Sanctuary is a sandspit and lagoon near the mouth of the Prosser River in the town of Orford on the east coast of Tasmania.
It is home to a variety of shorebirds, permanent and migratory; including the Red-capped Plover, Red-necked Stint, Caspian Tern, Pied Oystercatcher and Australian Pelican, as well as threatened species such as the Hooded Plover and Fairy Tern. Over 20 species of shorebirds have been sighted in the sanctuary. This sanctuary is the most southern breeding colony for the vulnerable Fairy Tern. In January 2020 there were 34 Fairy Tern nests at the Orford Bird Sanctuary which was significant as there are less than 100 breeding pairs across the Tasmanian mainland, King Island and Flinders Island.
The sanctuary was originally developed by the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council’s then Natural Resource Management team in collaboration with the Parks & Wildlife Service, Dr Eric Woehler, Convenor of Birdlife Tasmania, the Orford Community Group and the Orford Primary School Association.
The sandspit in the Orford Bird Sanctuary is internationally recognised as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International, although, this breeding site is regarded as in danger because of increasing disturbance by humans and in need of full protection.
By buying a booklet you are helping to save Tassie's wild places and threatened speices.
Spread the word that this Sanctuary is precious and needs protection.
