Averill Lawler - Dusk Tales and  Nocturnes
In music, a Nocturne begins quietly, then unfolds into a magical, colourful, playful mid-section where you imagine the secrets of the night awaken while the rest of the world is sleeping. Finally, the music settles again, perhaps returning to the original melody, touched with a hint of melancholy, before closing softly. I had this structure in mind as I painted these artworks.

There is a quiet magic in the night: the fading embers of day, the lingering traces of light and the encroaching darkness. In the dark we seek the light so that we can make sense of the world, ribbons of light that are fragile and fleeting. I wanted to capture the feeling of standing under the Aurora Australis that is visible to the naked eye. For thousands of years people all over the world have looked up into the night sky feeling small as they stargaze. I think these things unite us in experience and
across time.

These works capture the fall of dusk, the dancing light, moon ladders across the water and the deep indigo of the sky full of stars.
