These small birds may often be seen at Dennes Point on north Bruny Island. They congregate there in small flocks in the warmer months, and are beautiful to watch because they tend to line up, all facing the same direction into the wind.
The patterns in the feathers of the young bird I found particularly beautiful; as well as the fact that he was quite cranky and was calling out to be fed for most of the time.
These are truly magnificent little birds, and to watch them fly is a sheer pleasure. They are extremely interesting because they like to play games while flying in the air. Often they will pick up a small white shell in their beaks and drop it and pass it to each other while in flight.
The pattern at the bottom of the painting symbolically represents these small white shells that the crested terns so delight in playing with.
