These tiny rare plants are endemic to Tasmania, each found in only one known location, though Mt Wellington eyebright has been recorded across a larger area than Mt Eliza sedge, the Tasmanian herbarium holding only one specimen collected in 1982. A chance encounter and I’m caught up in drawing the rarest of our plants, so aptly named.
Mountain - A Group Exhibition
Mountains shape the Tasmanian landscape. Rising from mist and shadow, they stand as markers of deep time, sites of story, endurance, and awe. From the jagged dolerite cliffs of kunanyi to the weather-worn ranges of the west, these peaks hold layers of meaning—geological, ecological, and historical.
This group exhibition brings together artists working across diverse mediums to respond to the mountains of Tasmania. Through painting, photography, printmaking and drawing, each artist offers an individual encounter with these forms: as places of belonging, as symbols of resilience, as fragile environments under threat. It celebrates the mountains that define our unique landscape and experience in Tasmania.
About the Artist
Amanda Walker’s work primarily consists of drawing and photography, creating multi-layered works that interweave a narrative of an emerging landscape with history, duration and geological time. Her actions of repetition and layering respond to fragments of experiences brought together to recall or suggest our movement within the landscape.
Amanda completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Deans Roll of Excellence with Honours at the University of Tasmania 2012. Her most recent exhibition was in collaboration with scientists from the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies, Tasmania. Directly responding to their research helped her to understand that there are limits to our knowledge, and as habitat and species are lost forever, monitoring, measuring, preservation and protection are critical to survival. Through her work, Amanda continues to seek to understand the connections that emerge between the vulnerability of the landscape and our connectedness with nature.
