Artist's Statement
My one and only experience of encountering Federation Peak, in Tasmania’s South West National Park, was on a return flight from Melaleuca, from the safety of a small plane. This majestic and awe-inspiring mountain, with its quartzite jagged spires and glacial lakes, remotely entrenched in a rugged and ancient landscape, is considered Tasmania’s hardest mountain climb. The thought of human beings endeavouring to “conquer” the summit, some successfully, others unsuccessfully, left me feeling humbled and vulnerable in the face of this monolithic example of Nature’s invincible and wild beauty. At the same time, my aerial viewpoints gave me the privilege and exhilaration of seeing this colossus from above, like a god surveying the glory of creation from the heavens.
Mountain - A Group Exhibition
Mountains shape the Tasmanian landscape. Rising from mist and shadow, they stand as markers of deep time, sites of story, endurance, and awe. From the jagged dolerite cliffs of kunanyi to the weather-worn ranges of the west, these peaks hold layers of meaning—geological, ecological, and historical.
This group exhibition brings together artists working across diverse mediums to respond to the mountains of Tasmania. Through painting, photography, printmaking and drawing, each artist offers an individual encounter with these forms: as places of belonging, as symbols of resilience, as fragile environments under threat. It celebrates the mountains that define our unique landscape and experience in Tasmania.
