Artist Statement – A Slice of Summer
There are few places in Tasmania that capture the feeling of summer quite like Binalong Bay. With its brilliant turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and unmistakable orange lichen-covered granite, it is a landscape that feels almost too beautiful to be real.

For me, Binalong Bay holds a lifetime of treasured memories. Childhood summers spent swimming, fishing and exploring rock pools, and precious moments shared with my late mother and family. It is a place that has remained close to my heart throughout my life.

This artwork is a departure from my usual practice of depicting Tasmania’s native wildlife. Its softened forms and gently exaggerated colours reflect something more personal than a literal representation of the landscape. It is Binalong Bay as I remember it, full of warmth, colour and the simple happiness of long summer days.

My hope is that this piece invites others to revisit their own memories of summer. The familiar coastline, the salt air, the warmth of sun on granite, and those seemingly endless days spent beside the sea.

Because sometimes a place is more than a landscape. It is a collection of moments, memories and people we carry with us.
