Rob Blakers - Pilitika / Robbins Island - Red-capped Plover 2

Red-capped plover II, Pilitika / Robbins Island

Rob Blakers

Archival inkjet print on platine fibre rag
41 x 41cm

This endearing juvenile red-capped plover, along with many thousands of other shorebirds, feeds on the low-tide mudflats that surround Pilitika / Robbins Island. As the tide rises they don’t just move up to the high water mark at the place where they are feeding, but commute to specific high tide locations, flying for kilometres to a handful of specific roosts. They then do it all again 12 hours and 20 minutes later!

Rob Blakers has photographed in the wild places of Tasmania for over 40 years. His interests lie in landscape, environmental conservation and the evolution of photographic methods and values in the age of digital technology.
